| Sogrape releases Barca Velha |
|
With a production of just 26,000 bottles and 1500 magnums, and a release price of €75 ($110), this €2m release will have far more value in the speculation market.. With a huge demand in all the markets where it is present, 25% of this wine is exported, with Brazil and the US on top of the list.
Sogrape is the biggest Portuguese wine company, owning wine companies in Portugal (Mateus, Casa Ferreira, Offley, Sandeman), Argentina (Finca Flichman), New Zealand (Framingham), Spain (Sandeman), Chile (Chateau Los Boldos), and a distribution company in the USA (Evaton). All together, this represented an income of €185m in 2007, despite the weakened US dollar hurting some of the operations. In volume, the increase of 3.8% in 2007 for table wines shows that Sogrape is succeeding in the increased competitiveness of global markets. Globally, Sogrape exports 68% of its production. Fortified wines are facing difficulties, with sales reduction in the main markets (Portugal and France), but Porto Ferreira is still leader in Portugal with a quota of 27%, and a 12 point distance to the second in rank.
